Getting Started

Six steps to register your homeschool.

    Choose the homeschooling option that is right for you:

    • If you chose Options 2 or 3, check with your umbrella program or tutor to see how to proceed. In most cases they will take care of all paperwork and notifications with the government.
    • If you chose Option 1, continue on through Steps 2-6 below.

    File a letter of intent with your local school district

Frequently Asked Questions

Attendance is compulsory (Florida Statutes) for all children between the ages of six and sixteen. A child that turns six before February 1 of that term is required to attend school for the entirety of the term.

Florida has no set day or hour requirements for home instruction. However, if you are homeschooling under an umbrella program or with a private tutor you may be required to adhere to the typical 180-day school year.

There are three options:

  1. Establish a home education program
  2. Enroll in a private school designed for home educated students (Umbrella Program)
  3. Establish a private tutoring program

No. A Florida teaching license is not required for parents UNLESS they are establishing a private tutoring program.

No. Parents have the freedom to choose their child's curriculum.

No, except for option 1. There is a required annual evaluation of the homeschooled child's progress, and you get to choose which method best assesses your child's growth. You can see those options here: (Florida Homeschool Annual Evaluation)

Terminating Your Homeschool Program

Have you decided that homeschool is not the best option for your family in this season of life? That's ok! Educational freedom is about pursuing what will best serve your child and your family NOW.

To discontinue your homeschool program you will need to file a notice of termination with your local school district.
